Bihar Civil Service Selection Process 2024
The Bihar Civil Service Examination is conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) to recruit candidates for various administrative posts in the Bihar government. The selection process for Bihar Civil Service 2024 consists of three main stages: Preliminary Exam, Main Exam and Personal Interview. Each stage plays a crucial role in selecting the most qualified candidates for state government services.
Preliminary Examination (Prelims)
The Preliminary Exam is the first stage of the Bihar Civil Service selection process. It is a screening test and consists of objective-type questions. The marks obtained in the prelims are not counted in the final merit list but are essential for qualifying for the next stage.- Mode: Offline (pen and paper-based)
- Type: Objective (Multiple Choice Questions)

- Total Marks: 150

Qualifying Criteria
Candidates must secure the minimum cutoff marks set by BPSC to qualify for the Main Exam. The cutoff varies based on categories (General, SC, ST, OBC).
Main Examination (Mains)
Candidates who clear the prelims are eligible to appear for the Main Examination. This is a more comprehensive and descriptive test that evaluates a candidate’s depth of knowledge and understanding of various subjects.

- Total Marks: 900
Subjects Covered:
- General Hindi: 100 marks (qualifying in nature, with a minimum of 30% required)
- General Studies Paper 1: 300 marks (Covers History, Geography and Indian Polity)
- General Studies Paper 2: 300 marks (Covers Science & Technology, Environment, Current Affairs and Economy)
- Optional Paper: 300 marks (Candidates choose from a list of optional subjects)
Optional Subjects:
The candidate can select one optional subject from a wide range of choices like Public Administration, Sociology, Geography, History, etc.
Qualifying Criteria:
The marks obtained in the Mains Exam are crucial for determining the merit list, along with the interview marks.
Personal Interview
After clearing the Main Exam, candidates are called for the Personal Interview, which is the final stage of the Bihar Civil Service selection process.
- Total Marks: 120 marks
- Objective: The interview assesses the candidate’s personality, communication skills, decision-making ability, leadership qualities and suitability for civil service roles.
Final Merit List:
The final merit list is prepared by combining the marks obtained in the Mains Exam (900 marks) and the Interview (120 marks). Candidates are selected based on their rank in this final merit list.
