⚙️ BRO Selection Process 2025 – Stage-Wise Details
The Border Roads Organisation follows a transparent, merit-based selection process to ensure fair recruitment.
The complete process involves the following stages:
1. Scrutiny of Applications and Call Letters
After the last date of submission, all received applications are carefully scrutinized.
- If the number of applications is more than ten times the total vacancies, the department will apply a cut-off percentage based on the essential qualification.
- Only candidates who fall within 10 times the number of available posts in each category will be issued call letters for further stages.
- The Commandant, GREF Centre, holds the final authority in deciding cut-off marks and eligibility.
📌 Tip: Always ensure your application form is complete, with correct details and supporting documents, to avoid rejection during scrutiny.
2. Written Examination
The written exam is the most crucial stage in the BRO selection process as it determines the candidate’s merit position.
Key Features of the Written Test
- The exam is bilingual — questions are available in English and Hindi.
- Depending on the post, the paper can be:
- Objective type (MCQs)
- Subjective / descriptive type
- Or a combination of both
- The questions are designed according to the educational and technical qualifications prescribed for each post.
- Exam duration: 1½ to 3 hours depending on the trade.
Marking Scheme
| Category | Minimum Qualifying Marks |
|---|---|
| UR / OBC / EWS | 50% |
| SC / ST | 40% |
If the examination is held in multiple sessions, the final merit list will be prepared based on percentile normalization, ensuring fairness to all candidates.
📘 Note: The written test is OMR-based for objective papers, so candidates must use blue/black ballpoint pens as instructed.
3. Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
Candidates who qualify in the written test are called for the Physical Efficiency Test.
This test is qualifying in nature, which means marks are not added to the final merit list.
General PET Standard
- One Mile Run (1.6 km): Must be completed within 10 minutes
- Gender: PET is conducted for male candidates only.
- Relaxation: Ex-servicemen and departmental candidates are exempted from PET.
The PET ensures that candidates are physically fit and capable of performing duties in challenging terrains under the BRO.
4. Trade / Practical Test
The Trade Test or Practical Test applies only to technical posts like Vehicle Mechanic, Electrician, Painter, Driver Engine Static, Operator and Mason.
Key Details
- The Trade Test is also qualifying in nature.
- Candidates must score a minimum of 40% marks to qualify.
- The test evaluates:
- Practical skills in the relevant trade
- Tool handling
- Work accuracy and safety practices
📍 Example:
For a Vehicle Mechanic, practical questions may include identifying engine components, diagnosing faults, or repairing electrical circuits.
5. Medical Examination
Candidates who qualify in all earlier stages must undergo a medical fitness test conducted by a GREF or Army Medical Board.
Important Points
- The test follows standards prescribed in the BRO Medical Manual.
- It includes checks for:
- Vision, hearing and color blindness
- Physical deformities or disabilities
- General fitness for duty in field conditions
- Candidates declared “Unfit” may appeal once within a given time frame for a Review Medical Board.
Only medically fit candidates will be considered for final selection.
6. Final Merit List Preparation
The final merit list is prepared based solely on marks obtained in the written examination.
The Physical Efficiency Test and Trade Test are qualifying only and do not carry any marks.
Tie-Breaking Rules
If two or more candidates score equal marks, the merit order is decided based on:
- Higher marks in the trade test (if applicable)
- Higher age of the candidate
- Alphabetical order of the candidate’s name
The final list of selected candidates is published on the official BRO website and displayed at the GREF Centre, Pune.
