Gauhati High Court Selection Process 2026

Stage I Written Examination

The Stage I written examination carries a total of 120 marks. It is an objective type multiple choice test with a duration of 2 hours. The exam is conducted on OMR sheets.

This test checks a candidate’s knowledge of English language general knowledge general aptitude reasoning and Assamese language. The Assamese language section is of 20 marks.

The Assamese language paper is qualifying in nature. Candidates must score at least 40 percent marks which is 8 out of 20 to qualify for the next stage. Marks obtained in the Assamese language section are not counted while preparing the merit list.

Negative marking is applicable in the written examination. For every wrong answer 0.25 mark will be deducted from the total score.

Stage II Interview / Viva Voce

The Interview or Viva Voce carries 20 marks. Candidates equal to three times the number of vacancies in the ratio of 1:3 will be called for the Interview and document verification based on their performance in the written examination.

To qualify in the Interview a candidate must secure at least 60 percent marks which is 12 out of 20.

Final Selection Process

The final selection is done on the basis of total marks obtained in the written examination and the Interview.

If two or more candidates secure the same total marks preference will be given to the candidate who scored higher marks in the written examination. If the written exam marks are also the same then the older candidate will be given preference.

The Gauhati High Court has the authority to fix or change the cut off marks for both the written examination and the Interview.
