Supreme Court Law Clerk-cum-Research Associates Selection Process 2025
The Supreme Court of India offers a remarkable opportunity for law graduates to work as Law Clerks-cum-Research Associates on a short-term contractual basis. This position provides valuable exposure to the workings of the apex court, allowing young legal professionals to enhance their research, analytical and drafting skills. The selection process for the 2025 intake has been structured into three rigorous phases to ensure that only the most deserving candidates are selected.
Method of Selection
The selection process for the position of Law Clerk-cum-Research Associate consists of three phases:
Part I: Multiple Choice-Based Questions (MCQs)
- This phase tests candidates’ comprehension, legal knowledge and ability to understand and apply the law.
- MCQs are designed to assess candidates’ foundational understanding of legal concepts and their practical application.
Part II: Subjective Written Examination
- This phase evaluates candidates’ writing and analytical skills.
- Candidates are required to draft detailed and precise answers, showcasing their legal reasoning and ability to articulate arguments effectively.
Part III: Interview
- Shortlisted candidates from the written examinations will be invited for an interview.
- The interview assesses the candidates’ overall understanding of law, communication skills and suitability for the role of a Law Clerk.
Pattern of Examination
- Part I (MCQs): Conducted online, where candidates will answer objective-type questions.
- Part II (Subjective): Conducted in pen-and-paper mode with questions visible on the computer screen. Candidates must write their answers manually.
The examination pattern, minimum qualifying standards and detailed terms and conditions for the contractual assignment are outlined in the “Scheme of Engaging Law Clerk-cum-Research Associates on Short-Term Contractual Assignment in the Supreme Court of India – January 2024,” available on the official Supreme Court website (www.sci.gov.in).
Choice of Test Centers
Parts I and II of the selection process will be held on the same day across 23 cities in India:
- Test Centers: Ahmedabad, Ambala, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram and Visakhapatnam.
- A break will be provided between the two sessions.
- The number of test centers may be increased or decreased based on the volume of applications and at the discretion of the Chief Justice of India or the Committee of Hon’ble Judges on Law Clerks.
Date of Examination
The written examination for the position is scheduled for March 9, 2025.
- Part I (Online): Candidates will attempt MCQs on a digital platform.
- Part II (Pen-and-Paper): The subjective questions will be displayed on the computer screen and candidates must write their answers manually using a pen and paper.
