UPSC Combined Medical Services Selection Process 2025

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Combined Medical Services (CMS) Examination annually to recruit medical professionals for government health services. The selection process for UPSC CMS 2025 includes a two-stage examination process: a Computer-Based Examination (CBE) and a Personality Test. Candidates aspiring for medical officer positions must understand the detailed selection process to improve their chances of success.

Stages of the UPSC CMS Selection Process 2025

The selection process consists of the following stages:

• Personality Test/Interview

Computer-Based Examination (CBE)

The first phase of the UPSC CMS exam is a computer-based test, divided into two papers. Both papers consist of objective-type multiple-choice questions (MCQs).

• Paper I: General Medicine and Pediatrics
  • Total Questions: 120
  • Maximum Marks: 250
  • Duration: 2 hours
• Paper II: Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics, Preventive & Social Medicine

  • Duration: 2 hours
• Total Marks for CBE: 500
• Negative Marking: One-third of the marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

• General Medicine (96 Questions)
• Pediatrics (24 Questions)

Paper II:

• Surgery (40 Questions)
• Gynecology & Obstetrics (40 Questions)
• Preventive & Social Medicine (40 Questions)

Personality Test/Interview

Candidates who qualify in the Computer-Based Examination will be called for the Personality Test. This stage carries 100 marks and evaluates the candidate’s knowledge, communication skills, decision-making ability, and leadership qualities.

Final Selection & Merit List

The final merit list is prepared based on the total marks obtained in the CBE (500 marks) and the Personality Test (100 marks). Candidates securing top ranks in the merit list are recommended for appointment in various medical services.
