UPSC NDA & NA (I) Eligibility Criteria 2026

For Army Wing of NDA

  • 12th Class pass (10+2 pattern) or equivalent examination from recognized board in India.

For Air Force and Naval Wings of NDA & NA 10+2 Cadet Entry

  • Class 12th pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (10+2 pattern) or equivalent examination from recognized board in India.

UPSC NDA & NA (I) Selection Process 2026

  • Written Exam
  • Personality Test/SSB Interview
  • Document Verification
  • Medical Examination
  • Final Selection

Stage 1 – Written Examination

The first stage is a written examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.

The exam is held in offline mode (OMR based) and consists of two objective type papers.

Written Exam Structure

Important Points

  • All questions are objective type
  • Negative marking is applicable
  • One third marks are deducted for each wrong answer
  • Mathematics and GAT Paper B are bilingual
  • Candidates must qualify the cutoff fixed by UPSC

Only candidates who clear the written exam are shortlisted for the next stage


Stage 2 – Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview

Candidates who qualify the written exam are called for SSB Interview conducted by the Services Selection Board.

The SSB selection is conducted in two stages.


Stage 2A – SSB Stage I (Screening Test)

This stage is conducted on the first day of reporting.

It includes

  • Officer Intelligence Rating Test (OIR)
  • Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT)

Only candidates who clear Stage I are allowed to appear in Stage II. Candidates failing Stage I are sent back the same day


Stage 2B – SSB Stage II (Main Assessment)

Stage II is conducted over 4 to 5 days and includes detailed personality evaluation.

It consists of

  • Psychology Tests
  • Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO)
  • Personal Interview
  • Conference Round

The candidate is assessed by three officers

  • Interviewing Officer
  • Group Testing Officer
  • Psychologist

There is no separate weightage for any test. Final assessment is done on overall performance and officer like qualities


Special Test for Air Force Candidates – CPSS

Candidates opting for Air Force Flying Branch must qualify the Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS).

Important rules

  • CPSS is conducted only once in a lifetime
  • Candidates who fail CPSS cannot apply again for Flying Branch
  • If CPSS is not qualified candidates may be considered for Ground Duty branches based on preference

Medical Examination

Candidates recommended by SSB must undergo a medical examination conducted by military hospitals.

Medical fitness is mandatory

  • As per NDA and NA physical standards
  • Temporary unfit candidates may get review chance
  • Final merit depends on medical fitness also

Final Merit List

The final merit list is prepared by UPSC based on

  • Written Exam Marks (900)
  • SSB Interview Marks (900)

Total marks considered = 1800

Service allocation is done based on

  • Rank in merit list
  • Medical fitness
  • Vacancies
  • Candidate service preference

Joining and Training

Candidates selected in the final merit list receive joining letters online.

Training begins for

  • NDA 157th Course
  • Naval Academy 119th Course

Training starts from January 2027. Candidates must report on time or candidature may be cancelled.
