The final selection is based on the marks obtained in the Online Main Examination and Interview only.
Stage 1: Online Preliminary Examination
The first stage of the selection process is the IBPS PO Preliminary Examination, which is conducted in online mode. This is a qualifying examination used to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination.

Stage 5: Final Merit List and Provisional Allotment
After completion of the Interview, IBPS prepares the final merit list.
Weightage for Final Selection
| Selection Stage | Weightage |
|---|---|
| Online Main Examination | 80% |
| Interview | 20% |
The final merit list is prepared using the combined normalized scores of the Main Examination and Interview.
Candidates who rank high enough in the merit list are provisionally allotted to one of the participating public sector banks based on:
- Merit
- Bank preferences submitted by the candidate
- Category-wise reservation rules
- Availability of vacancies
- Government guidelines
The provisional allotment does not guarantee appointment. The allotted bank conducts the final document verification and eligibility checks before issuing the appointment letter.
Negative Marking
IBPS follows a negative marking system in both the Preliminary and Main Objective Examinations.
- 0.25 marks (one-fourth of the marks assigned to a question) are deducted for every incorrect answer.
- No marks are deducted for unanswered questions.
