The Preliminary Examination employs multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and uses an Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) system. The exam paper is available in both English and Bengali. Marks obtained in the preliminary examination do not contribute to the final merit list.
Note: Incorrect answers in the preliminary examination lead to negative marking, with ¼th of the allotted marks deducted for each wrong response.

All three papers are conducted on the same day at selected centres chosen by the West Bengal Police Recruitment Board. Paper-I’s question paper is available in English, Bengali and Nepali. Candidates can choose any of these languages for their responses.
The West Bengal Police Recruitment Board determines the qualifying marks for each paper and the aggregate score for the entire competitive examination.
